Island flight part 1

Lolomiina: 11.07.2022

Yesterday the day started with a search for corncrakes. These rare birds have settled near the campsite and make crackling noises day and night. Even though Moritz and I must have come close to finding the object, we still didn't find it.

The rest of the day was spent on foot or by bike in the surrounding area. Just before falling asleep, we also dismantled the awning, as the wind was picking up a bit and we don't trust the tent to withstand more than 50 km/h.

Today we continued. After a short detour to the St. Kilda View Point (this morning it was briefly clear of fog - unfortunately the island we wanted to see was already covered in fog), we went to Harris Island.

After a very expensive lunch (9.50 pounds for fish and chips) from an old bus, the wind really picked up. Just as we had stopped at a beautiful viewpoint, I wanted to test if I could still open the door despite the wind. Ready to push, I open it and before I can react, it is completely ripped open and slams unpleasantly. Luckily it closed again.

But at the next stop, it hardly opens anymore, as it has unfortunately twisted and bent. ☹️ These are now Tesla gap dimensions and I am currently getting in and out somewhere else.

Very annoying, but at least it's still attached.

On the way, we could already see many destroyed tents and the wind is supposed to get even stronger. So as not to lose the roof tent as well, we took a 4-person room in a bunkhouse. There is also a common room, kitchen and shower for those living here. We hope to be able to sleep better than we would in the car.

Tomorrow we are planning the crossing to the mainland and to the east. It should be a bit warmer and less windy there. Let's hope the ferry can sail.
