2022 - September - Sark

Lolomiina: 02.09.2022

Interestingly, I got the most response from you regarding my photos of the small island of Sark. Probably it is so unknown that no one had heard of it.

It belongs to the Channel Islands, so it is located in the English Channel, and is only 5.5 km² in size. With its approximately 500 inhabitants, it belongs to the larger island of Guernsey.

The special status of the Channel Islands as a whole is interesting, as they are neither part of the United Kingdom nor colonies, but direct crown dependencies.

However, Sark is even more special because the island is car-free and has no paved roads. I haven't found out why this is the case. But by now, it is certainly a nice marketing label. However, nobody lives here like a hundred years ago, instead of cars, tractors are used here. They are allowed. The 'island bus', which takes tourists up the mountain for 1.50 pounds, is also tractor-powered.

Since the island is really small, it can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A day trip is therefore perfect for Sark. You are about 1 hour on the ferry from Guernsey.

And because there were so many inquiries about how to get to the Channel Islands in the first place, here is the answer: Either by plane or by (car)ferry from Saint-Malo. That's how we got here and it was a good choice because Saint-Malo is definitely worth a visit!
