Desert

Lolomiina: 07.11.2022

After Mattis felt better, we drove to the desert.

At the beginning of the sand track to Wadi Sands, we let some air out of the tires to drive better in the sand.

All the other cars on the way to the desert were at least one size bigger than our SUV. So we were laughed at and asked if we really had four-wheel drive.

We roughly knew where we wanted to go. When we asked for directions at the beginning of the track, they said, "Just keep going straight. There's nothing else. You can't get lost."

So we started driving. On the way, we saw tire tracks on the dunes next to us. So we drove there too and "surfed" on the sand.

After about 10 km, the "Desert Nights Camp" appeared out of nowhere (if you want, you can look at the pictures on the Internet).

Before the camp, we asked for directions again. This time, we saw tire tracks on a huge dune. We asked if we could drive up there too. After our car was laughed at again, the answer was, "Sure, go ahead and try. We have proper cars here and we'll be around. We'll pull you out if needed!"

After the experience from the small dunes before, we thought we'll show them! And we did. With a run-up, we shot up the approximately 50-meter dune. Unfortunately, we only shot up the first few meters. After that, even full throttle in second gear didn't work anymore. The tires were too narrow and the engine too weak. Even a bigger run-up didn't bring any success. Well, at least we didn't have to be pulled out.

We continued driving. Eventually, a path turned off and we followed it. When we no longer saw any camps and there was only sand around us, we set up our tent.

It was truly amazing! There was no sound. Only twice, tours of tourists on quads passed by at a distance. On the opposite dune slope, we saw "real" off-road vehicles. They drove along the dunes and went to the Sunset Point. We didn't have to go there separately because we were already there.

In the evening, by the campfire, we read some Harry Potter and roasted marshmallows. Just wonderful!
