Trotternish is the northernmost peninsula of Skye and offers many attractions and hikes. That's why we divided our trip into 3 days. Today we started with an easy walk to Hugh's Castle, the last medieval fortress built on Skye. The builder's name was Hugh MacDonald. He was the cousin of Donald Gorm Mor from nearby Duntulm Castle. It is said that Hugh intended to have his cousin murdered. He wrote two letters, one inviting his cousin to a meal and one hiring an assassin to kill Donald. Unfortunately, the two letters were swapped and the wicked plan was uncovered. Hugh was held captive in Duntulm Castle and was only given salted beef to eat. However, he was denied water, so he lost his mind and died of thirst shortly afterwards. Although Hugh did not die in his own castle, this castle is considered one of the most haunted in Scotland.
Our next stop took us to the Skye Museum of Island Life. Here you can discover and visit reconstructed cottages of various professions (blacksmith, crofter, etc.). Just behind the museum is a cemetery with the grave of Flora MacDonald, the savior of Bonnie Prince Charlie. We postponed another walk for another trip and continued on to Duntulm Castle.
