I decided spontaneous the day before to go to the Zoo with a friend because I wanted to enjoy the weather and as I have never been (had it on my bucket list), I thought it would be a good occasion. That day there was also the Melbourne Cup, a holiday where you can go to the horse race and place a bet and if you are lucky you'll go home with some extra money. This day is also the occasion for the people to dress up in suits and dresses for special occasions and not to forget the very crazy creations of hats like the ones in England. Exactly the same over here. The bigger or more creative the better and they cost sometimes a fortune. People even get there by helicopter.
We went early to the Zoo to have enough time to explore. As well to have the possibility to see all of the animals if they want to be seen. The Zoo is big and there are all kind of animals. It was the first time I saw kangaroos and koalas in real and many more. I thought the best of the whole Zoo was the Butterfly House where it's hot like in a sauna but the moment you step in is full of butterflies of different colors and shapes and they even land on people and you can hold them in your hand. It's very fascinating and you can easily be gravitated to them. On the other side it's a kind of relief as soon as you step out and you feel the fresh breeze of air.
All together it's a great opportunity to get away from the city and stay there for a moment. Green areas for having a picnic or just relax are all over the Zoo. I'm glad I went, otherwise I would have missed another sight in this city. We stayed there more than 4 hours and went back to the city to have some lunch. We ended up going to an open restaurant situated next to the river behind Flinder's Street with relaxing live music and a beautiful view over the Skyline of Melbourne city. Very chilled atmosphere and good food. I am sure I will definitely go back again and enjoy another afternoon sitting there and listening to the music. What else do you need to be happy?
