Finally. We woke up to sunshine this morning. Now the mountains and the beautiful landscape around the lodge are finally visible. On the drive to Lake Tekapo (about 180 km), we wanted to visit the local ski resort at Mount Hutt, the second largest in New Zealand with 3 lifts (!). The ascent to the mountain was over a poorly secured, very airy gravel road (unbelievable that you are supposed to drive up there in winter). Because of rockfall and my panic, we turned back just before reaching the summit.
The sun weakened in the afternoon, but the lake showed off its turquoise side. During a walk, we extensively explored the town. Apart from several holiday homes, motels, a few pubs, souvenir shops and lots of Asian tourists, there is not much here.
We are staying in the 'Woodhaven' cottage, a comfortable wooden house, part of the 'Lake Tekapo Holiday Homes' with a beautiful view of the lake.
The starry night sky is said to be particularly clear here, but tonight it is cloudy....
