we-in&around Broome

شايع ٿيل: 12.11.2017

As hinted at in our last entry, we got stuck in Broome. We had already wondered why our camper was always tilting slightly... well... because the left spring was simply worn out.

So our car is now in the workshop in Broome and we have taken an enforced break here. There are certainly worse places to get stuck - but see for yourself :)

With our replacement Land Cruiser without central locking and automatic 4-wheel drive - yes, I still know such cars from my early childhood (Wendo) - we first drove up to Cape over Broome.

Without knowing it, we drove the first and second day without 4-wheel drive and got stuck several times (with a big pull-out action) until someone explained these mysterious levers on the front tires that activate the actual 4-wheel drive ':-( .

But it went up and down here, with dreamy beaches and pretty tough and eventually soft sandy tracks. Thanks to the unplanned break, we finally took a real breath after being on the road for days.

On the road, we partly rattled through the Gibb River Road, over hard and worn-out dirt tracks, and hiked through beautiful gorges and dark caves full of freshwater crocodiles. It's really crazy here, when you think you're safe, a shark, a freshwater or saltwater crocodile wants to eat you.

Also exciting is the history of the 'Europeans' here, who were all 'zugroast' (unfamiliar) and initially treated the Aboriginals, like all 1st World Nations, quite harshly and suppressed them. Sad stories about uprisings and baobab trees that served as prisons.

Otherwise pretty awesome here... good life... good food... good beer.
