Wahiba Sands

Today we head from the (relative) coolness of the mountains directly into the heat of the sand desert. After descending from Jabal Akdhar, we have to cover about 150 km through a rather dull and somewhat desolate semi-desert of stones. The only thing that brings some variety are occasional camels by the roadside, as well as the numerous construction sites for the new water pipelines in this region, which stretch for several hundred kilometers from the seawater desalination plants on the coast to the inland.

At the meeting point for the 'Oman Desert Private Camp', the tire pressure is reduced significantly for the upcoming sand drive - and then it's off into the sand and the dunes. In convoy, we follow the Omani who effortlessly leaves his track in the sand. The drive to the camp on a dune is really something! We spend the night in a kind of Bedouin tent - not bad, but the emerging sandstorm blows the sand everywhere - even between your teeth. Nevertheless, the dinner tastes good and in the morning we can fully enjoy the desert again, with calm winds. Around noon, it's time to head back - partly steep descend down the dunes - a delightful experience with a bit of thrill.

Today we head from the mountains to the sand desert. First we have to pass a rather boring passage through a stony desert, with only a few camels and several construction sites for the new water pipeline system bringing some variety.

After reducing the tire pressure, we follow the Omani owner to the 'Oman Desert Private Camp' - a great tour through the sand! We stay overnight in a kind of Bedouin's tent, unfortunately a sandstorm is getting up - blowing the sand everywhere, even between your teeth. But the next morning it's calm again and we can enjoy the sand desert and also the dune ride back with our car.
