On the day of departure, we had to get up early: our alarm clock rang at 3:30 a.m. so that we would be on time for our morning flight at the airport. In fact, we needed less time for baggage drop-off and security checks than expected, so we had two more hours to wait for the flight at the gate...
But then we were off to Sardinia, where we will spend the next two weeks in the northern part of the island.
Our hotel was located on a hill and offered a beautiful view of Palau, the water, and the island of La Maddalena off the coast of Sardinia.
After the early departure, we still had enough time on the day of arrival to explore the town. So we made our way down towards the harbor.
We passed by the church of the town, where a well-dressed crowd had gathered, apparently waiting for a wedding couple.
We continued towards the water and followed the coast to a small lighthouse, which is a very popular postcard motif.
Our path led us further along the coast to Spiaggia de La Sciumara, a wide beach that, in October, had only a few visitors.
Since the fortress was already in sight, we decided to take a small detour there.
We walked along a road that wound its way up the mountain in serpentine fashion.
When we arrived at the fortress, we were lucky: a guided tour began shortly thereafter. The lady at the ticket office closed her ticket office and went into the fortress with us. Unfortunately, anyone who arrived afterwards could not buy a ticket and did not find any information about when the next tour would take place...
The fortress was built into the mountain in the 19th century and was originally intended to help defend against French attackers - Corsica is not far away and can be seen from the viewpoint of the fortress.
After about an hour-long explanation of the fortress and the view, we set off again, but this time fortunately downhill.
We passed many bizarre rock formations and eventually returned to the town.
There, we fortified ourselves in a café with coffee and very delicious cake before we went back to our hotel.
On the way, we also visited the church: a modern building with a colorful altarpiece.
