Bad weather front in Banyoles at the lake - January 20th

شايع ٿيل: 21.01.2020

The night was relatively calm, but in the morning the sea is pushing a lot of water. Unfortunately, it's drizzling and we have to have our coffee with a chocolate croissant at the camping site bar. The waves here are also about 2.5 meters high, breaking about two meters in front of the camping site...that's not what the Mediterranean Sea is usually like. Two days ago in Valencia it was completely smooth, but it will probably look different this morning.

More and more water is coming onto the camping site and when we want to go to the beach before leaving, we can't even get there because the front part of the site is already flooded. We have a brief chat with the camping site staff, who inform us that the roads further up are also flooded and they may have to move the remaining campers to the local bungalows, as it looks like the back pitches will also be flooded...time to go! That's what we do, everything packed and off we go!

We set off in the rain, we will arrive in the rain! First, a quick shopping trip and then onto the train to Barcelona. In the meantime, it's so windy that Jörni has to work hard to keep the bus on the right track. There's really something in the air. There are constant warnings on the highways about the wind. Near Barcelona, the wind speed is about 50-60 km/h and even the trucks are swaying noticeably. The sky is black-gray and it's raining on and off. We actually wanted to visit the monastery in Montserrat, but due to the really terrible weather conditions, we decide against it and continue driving. The view from this massive mountain into the gray nothingness would be a real shame, and the rain, the low temperatures of 7 degrees (mind you, down here) and the immense wind make us realize that we need to postpone this excursion to another time.

So where to now...floods on the coast and snow further inland...so it's a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea...! We decide on a compromise and look for a spot by the lake near Girona, not right on the coast but not too far inland either. Here, we settle for six degrees and of course, it hasn't stopped raining upon arrival. But everywhere in this area, 100% rain is forecast...! We check into a mediocre campsite, right across from the sanitation facilities, because we've learned that in shitty weather, we need to act practically!

Despite the nasty weather, we take a long walk with the dog and go around the entire lake, which is a good six kilometers. Just as we return, the drizzle turns into heavy rain...lucky us! We had planned to cook, but with this weather, it's not possible outside...so we'll have a sandwich, that's fine too! Now we're sitting in the bus and I'm using the time for the blog, and Jörni is watching cat videos or something on his phone!

Now we'll listen to the rain on the roof for a bit and see where we're heading tomorrow!
