Some of you may have already noticed that last weekend I was at the Oktoberfest in Canberra. Or rather in Queanbeyan which is in NSW. I was in 3 states in one day, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, and New South Wales. On Friday, the Lane family allowed me to fly to Canberra in the morning. Domestic flights here in Australia are so uncomplicated. You don't need a passport, and they don't check if you have more than 100 ml of liquid with you (or it simply doesn't matter). So, on Friday afternoon, I flew to Canberra for a weekend trip. I stayed with a girl whom I didn't know before. Jessi is also an Au Pair from AIFS and she was with another friend at the Orientation days in Sydney. That's how we met. I don't think I would have stayed with a stranger for a weekend before coming to Australia. The Australian calmness and the basic trust in everything have rubbed off on me in the past 3 months. Hard to believe, but I've already been in Australia for 3 months. That means it's halftime with my host family:/
Back to the Oktoberfest. After getting ready, Jessi's host dad drove us to the Oktoberfest. We can say one thing about the Oktoberfest: it's incomparable to the Wiesn back home (I have no experience, but Jessi is from Munich;)). We quickly understood why the beer steins were made of plastic. Also, the beer here is incredibly expensive, so we found the Wiesn to be cheap. It's also worth noting that Australians think that everyone in Germany walks around in mini dirndls, and unfortunately, we didn't see many people wearing lederhosen either. All fake fabric pants:(
On Sunday, Jessi showed me around Canberra, and we spent a few hours at the lake that splits the city into two parts. There I got my first sun imprint from Australia that wasn't caused by a sunburn 😜 Overall, it was a very successful weekend and my first time truly celebrating here in Australia.
