Our journey continued towards Cairns.
At this point, a funny thing about the pronunciation of the city. With every local you have a conversation with, the question of how to pronounce Cairns follows. It feels like everyone emphasizes it differently. Some say Cains, others say Ceirns, and others say Cairns. We are curious to see how many possibilities we will encounter on the nearly 1000km journey.
Yeppoon was the stop for the last two days. On one hand, this is the southern entrance to the Great Barrier Reef, and on the other hand, this is the 'Topic of Capricorn' - the southern tropic. The first one should be more interesting for us.
This time we found a parking space with a shower and everything. It had to be done. After exploring Yeppoon on the first day - which was not that much - we bought our tickets for the ferry the next day. We consulted Google once again and used several travel reports for assistance. The next destination was set - Great Keppel Island. It is said to be THE unknown diamond in the Great Barrier Reef and inviting for snorkeling. We want to test that.
By the way, after buying new snorkel masks in Kuala Lumpur - for those who don't know where KL is - Google knows 😉 - we were well-prepared! Our expectations were high and we were ready to go.
Before that, we enjoyed our first proper, starry night. And we saw soooooo many stars 🌠⭐...
Today, the alarm went off at 06:15 AM. The backpacks were packed and we took the ferry. Breakfast was moved to the island. And from 7 AM it was already Hot Hot Hot 🥵🥵 ...
Even the journey to the island was worth seeing. Blue water, white sand, and sun. The first snorkeling spot was quickly found. But before that, we had breakfast on a dreamy beach. 🥐🥞 We realized - there are definitely worse places for breakfast 🤭😇.
After that, we put on our masks and quickly jumped into the water ...
Unfortunately, we searched in vain for the colorful and numerous fish ... Our hope was on the second spot. Unfortunately, we also did not find what we had hoped for. Only a few times a school of fish crossed the lens. The corals were unfortunately not as colorful as the fish. Very, very sad.
Nevertheless, the island was very beautiful and definitely recommended for a day trip! Maybe next time we will have better luck finding fish and turtles 🐠🐟🐢 ...
On the island, we briefly lost our orientation. So we asked locals with a boat, who promptly took us to the right side of the island. Not bad, right? 😁👏🏻 But the funny part was yet to come. When we arrived at the final stop, no one could tell us the depth of the water for getting off the 'fancy thing' 🛳. So Falk tried his luck fully equipped, without a backpack 🎒, and literally went under. Only the hat and glasses were floating on top. We had plenty of electronic equipment with us. Then, the nice family drove a few meters to the shore so that Ulli and the valuable cargo would not drink water 🙌🏼.🤣
Unfortunately, we got a little crabby today .. it will look better tomorrow.
Today, Ulli mourns the loss of two valuable companions who were always by her side. We say thank you to a pair of adidas flip flops and a pair of pants. Both were tossed in the trash today 😩☝🏼
