Give up on security and just walk away???

Опубликовано: 03.04.2018

Since the middle of the summer of 2017, a great dissatisfaction has spread within me, with the job, with Munich and my life in general. Until then, everything had been fun, but an uncomfortable feeling slowly spread and it screamed for change within me. Unfortunately, I didn't know what to change. So everything remained as it was and I just went on. I still had fun and didn't suffer at all, but something was missing.

During Oktoberfest, I had some friends visiting. Among them was Katja (my roommate from Lisbon in 2012) from Slovenia. She excitedly told me that she is planning to go to New Zealand in February. I found that very exciting, but also a bit scary to just leave everything behind. She asked me why I don't do the same, since I always wanted to and don't seem quite happy at the moment. Since I am also turning 31 right before her, it is her opinion that it is my last chance =)

I rejected all of this for myself, but just a few days later I caught myself stalking the internet to find out what you need to just leave. Within a short period of time, I was so hooked on the idea of leaving that I couldn't think of anything else. Canada was the desired destination, as I find the nature there incredibly beautiful. So I looked up everything I needed and informed my parents about my plan to go to Canada for a year. After they reacted very positively and practically encouraged me to really go for it, I sat down at home on November 1st, 2017 and filled out all the necessary visa documents. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that there were no more spots available for Canada. Completely fixated on the idea of leaving Germany, I spontaneously decided on Australia and filled out everything for that. After about 15 minutes, everything was done and then it was time to wait. Wait until the confirmation finally arrives. I felt like (maybe really) refreshing my emails every 5 minutes, but nothing happened. Neither that day, nor the next or the one after =( After 4 days, I became nervous and was afraid of having made a mistake. Did I accidentally indicate somewhere that I am on a list of criminals? I was confused! So I checked the online platform on which I had registered and there was the mistake. In all the excitement, I had written my email address wrong. To be precise, my own last name =D That's when I finally saw that I already had the visa on November 2nd, 2017. With that, the first and most important step was done.

Everything else went incredibly fast and, surprisingly, very easy. I informed my roommate and canceled the room before Christmas. Then I quit my job, which was emotionally the hardest step for me, as I had met great people there in the last almost 3.5 years and learned a lot for life. Then all I had to do was cancel all other ongoing contracts and organize my move.

Since I have great parents, my move went very quickly and smoothly. I rented a van, with which my parents made a trip across Germany to me. 2 days later, they went the same way back and we stored all my junk at their place again.

I booked the flight in February and then it was final that it would finally start on April 3rd, 2018.
