Night Market

The main reason for the scooter was the Saturday night market in the island's capital, Thongsala. For this, a small street in the center near the pier is closed off and declared a pedestrian zone. The local traders set up their stalls and offer everything a real tourist needs or believes they need. From t-shirts to jewelry to sunglasses, everything is available. Of course, there is also food and drink available. Numerous stalls offer small Thai snacks and exotic delicacies - from grilled meat skewers to all sorts of sweet treats. Most of it unknown to our eyes and tastes. I treated myself to a waffle filled with coconut and served on a small banana leaf. It tasted excellent.

The market is also a welcome change for the local population, who are out and about in large numbers. They probably come more for the culinary delights than for the other offers for sale.

I was looking for flip-flops, but couldn't find any, just like pants or shirts. They were available, but either too small like the shirts or too warm like the pants.

Of course, there was also music. Near the pier, a DJ played loud beats from speakers, and in the middle of the sales street, an old Thai sat playing old hits on a guitar, not bad at all.

The whole market is more of an event to see, as the sales offer is rather meager. Nevertheless, it is a nice change and if you take your time, you might find one or the other thing.
