Kunshan through the eyes of expats

The operators of the industrial area where our Voith branch is located invited us to a (promotional) tour of Kunshan. I have no idea why I ended up on the guest list but I was definitely excited. Besides me, the General Manager of Kone, for example, was also present. So he is the Lord of the Tower (see my way to work 😉).

We met at the Kunshan Exhibition Center. We were given a tour with explanations about the history of the city and what is produced here.
Kunshan has developed from a rural village on the outskirts of Shanghai into an industrial city with one of the highest per capita tax revenues.

It all started in the 80s.

Today, for example. Giant (bicycle manufacturer) has its largest factory here and builds such bicycles.

Also under construction is a subway from Suzhou to Kunshan and on to Shanghai. The first subway in Suzhou was opened in 2012. One of the stations is being built right outside our doorstep. In the future, you could travel from here to Pudong Airport in eastern Shanghai.

After the "performance show," the active part came. We were transported to a "historic village" southwest of Kunshan and were allowed to make soy sauce and pastries ourselves.

Finally, there was a "Kunshan Opera" and a boat trip.

That was the end of this interesting day.
