Vladivostok translates to "dominates the East." During the Soviet era, Vladivostok became the main base of the Russian Pacific Fleet and thus a "closed city." Foreigners were not allowed to visit the city until the 1990s.

The Nikolai Triumphal Arch was built on the occasion of the visit of the crown prince, later Emperor Nicholas II, in 1891. After his visit to the Far East, construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began. After the revolution, the triumphal arch was demolished and rebuilt in 2003.


Vladivostok is home to the only cog railway in all of Russia.
