Day 25 - Coromandel Peninsula

A tour of the Coromandel Peninsula was the plan for today.

I start in Matamata quite early and drive to Karangahake Gorge, where I take a short walk to the Windows Tunnels.

Then I continue up the west coast of the peninsula to Coromandel Town via Thames. The weather was much worse here two years ago.

Now I'm heading to Hahei via Whitianga. I take the approximately 3km walk to Cathedral Cove. After the return trip, I treat myself to a Realfruit ice cream with mixed berry yogurt in town.

Then on to Hot-Water Beach. Here, at low tide, people dig holes in the sand at a certain spot and these fill with warm water due to thermal activity underground - for those who enjoy it.

Now I'm heading back along the east coast to my overnight accommodation in Thames. The name of the motel, Sunset Motel, says it all: a beautiful sunset on the beach awaits.
