Australia for Beginners

Publicat: 01.05.2017

After a loooong 8-hour flight without food and drink (...at $5.50 for a small water; let's not even talk about the price for a lukewarm microwave meal), the plane landed in Sydney on Tuesday, March 14th, 2017, punctually at 12:30 PM.

After about three-quarters of an hour of nerve-wracking searching, I finally found the right bus to the city center. As I quickly realized in the next few days, this is not so easy in Sydney in general...

For the first few days, I booked a hostel in Kings Cross, the 'entertainment district' of Sydney. All full of backpackers, colorful birds, scantily clad ladies, dark guys... You can definitely notice the difference to Triebes! ;-)

The first days I mainly spent exploring the city and applying for various things, such as an Australian bank account, a tax number, an Australian cell phone number, etc.

The Australians are all super friendly! Already during my first walk through the Botanical Garden towards the Opera House and Harbour Bridge (yes, the classics!), several people smiled and greeted me friendly as they passed by. You immediately notice that you are no longer in Germany! ;-)

In the second week, I moved to the district of Glebe. Much quieter than Kings Cross, but also significantly nicer! Many small colorful Victorian terraced houses, shops, restaurants, pubs, markets...

The city is also famous for its many (dreamy) beaches. I visited some of them and was really impressed! Only swimming didn't work out so well, as it rained every (!) day. Unlike in Europe, where spring is slowly on the rise, it is autumn here.

Sydney is really great and I have decided to come back here for sure!
