January 19, 2022: Murcia
F. We spent the night on the cliffs of Alicante and in the morning we drove directly to Elx (Elche) to visit the extraordinary palm forest. In my opinion, it was nothing more than a park with many different types of palm trees, and we were out of there in 10 minutes.
The stop was just on the way to Murcia. This city was supposed to have much more to offer. Finding a parking space in Murcia proved to be very difficult. Everything was full of cars and the parking spaces were mostly parked in the second row. After half an hour, we finally found a large parking lot far outside the city center. Murcia has not been affected by European tourism as much as all the other larger Spanish cities we have visited so far. I was particularly impressed by the large cathedral. Its interior structure was completely different from all the churches I have seen before. There was not a large nave with pews and an altar, but the main focus of this church was on the numerous larger side altars along the side walls. The main altar in the center of the church was no less grand, but it took up a smaller part of the church as a whole. Opposite the altar was the choir area with a huge organ, and in between were a maximum of 20 rows of chairs. Both the sanctuary and the choir area were surrounded by a large iron fence that reached up to the ceiling. So these two areas looked like large lion enclosures, as they were also connected by a corridor that could be closed off from the audience.
Another beautiful building in Murcia is the Real Casino. This is the complex of buildings of the institution of the same name, which is a private club of the upper society. This place was built and founded in 1853 and houses various architectural styles. From the old Arab style to the styles of the 19th and 20th centuries, there are many beautiful rooms that are specially furnished depending on the purpose of the room. The casino was completely renovated between 2006 and 2009 and was then awarded the title "Real" by the Spanish King Juan Carlos I. Only the ground floor is accessible to the public. The upper part is reserved for club members. There are also various rooms for different casino games.
