Diwali Festival

Publicat: 19.10.2017

Today me and the other language school students in my host family were able to participate in a Hindu festival. My host family is originally from Fiji, so they are devoted Hindus. The Diwali Festival, or translated in German as Festival of Lights, is celebrated on the darkest day of the year. The idea is to celebrate the victory of light over darkness. Therefore, candles are lit throughout the house and normally the garden should also be filled with candles. However, this is difficult due to the continuous downpour outside.

Before the actual meal, on Diwali you eat a plate of various Indian sweets and fruits (Mithai). After that, you move on to a delicious exclusively vegetarian dinner. I definitely can't assign everything a name, but it's delicious. Of course, today we also tried eating with our hands. My mother would have probably chased me away from the table, because my dexterity with my fingers is not as elegant as the more practiced ones at the table.

Of course, Diwali also includes prayers and chants, but we missed those because we were at school.

Between Diwali and the last post, there were of course other experiences, but they are still being processed.
