First week at Love in a bowl

This week was our first week of work at Love in a bowl in Hout Bay. We are volunteering 40 hours per week for the next 2-3 months on this organic farm and we get to take on various tasks. The harvest goes to restaurants, soup kitchens, individuals, and especially to children and elderly people through donations.
This week was our first week of work at Love in a bowl in Hout Bay. We are volunteering 40 hours per week for the next 2-3 months on this organic farm and we get to take on various tasks. The harvest goes to restaurants, soup kitchens, individuals, and especially to children and elderly people through donations.
For example, here we made compost together with Bundi and Fetchu. We layer branches, grass, and horse manure on top of each other and water it so that it heats up and starts cooking inside. We also weed, rake grass, harvest vegetables, help wash and sort them in the "washing station", weigh them, pack them in shopping bags, help with the deliveries, and take care of many other things.

Love in a bowl consists of a total of 5 different farms. Here, you can see the "main farm" where we spend most of our time. We have to work 5 hours, have a one-hour lunch break, and then are allowed to spend 2 more hours on the farm. The sun is already so strong in the morning that you have to have sunscreen and a hat with you. 16 degrees Celsius is already too hot due to the intense sun.

The most beautiful workplace in the world! 🌻 It feels good to have to live so minimally and to hear all the stories of our colleagues. You learn to appreciate your own life anew and get a different perspective on things. I can already see myself crying when it's over. You know I'm emotional. 😂 We were immediately warmly welcomed and integrated by the 18 men and 5 women. These are the friendliest and most generous people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, even though they have very little and earn very little. They receive 5950 rand for 40 hours of hard physical work. Unfortunately, Love in a bowl is currently unable to pay their employees properly due to crop losses caused by heavy rain and Covid, and they currently have an additional deduction of -15% of their salary.
