After the hike, we drove a bit further yesterday and ended up at a cozy campsite. After a restful night and a delicious breakfast, we turn onto the 'Forgotten World Highway'. The 150km long road winds through deserted valleys and past beautiful lookouts with views of the hilly landscape. In Whangamomona, an independent republic, we stopped for lunch. The sleepy village is the only one along the entire highway.
Arriving at the west coast near New Plymouth, we head to a 'freecamping' spot. After various inquiries and false information, we received confirmation from locals that we can stay overnight for free here at Lake Rotomanu. A beautiful spot on a grassy field right by the lake and only a few meters from the sea.
