Mackinaw Island

Publicados: 14.09.2024

This morning I felt better again, but now Matthias was hit. Thank God it wasn't as severe as it was for me yesterday, and after taking an ibuprofen and a plastic breakfast, we were able to set off towards Mackinaw Island. We had to park a bit away from the ferry dock. After about a quarter of an hour a shuttle bus came and picked us up. For $72, we could cross to Mackinaw Island by ferry. The ride took 16 minutes. Since it was still quite foggy in the morning, there wasn't much to see. Mackinaw Island is a completely car-free island, and you feel like you've been transported back in time by years. Horse-drawn carriages are everywhere. But the island is truly beautiful. Our first stop was the world-famous Grand Hotel. The Grand Hotel is the largest summer hotel in the world. Just the terrace is over 200 m long. We walked around the hotel and were really impressed; it's a very beautiful property and a magnificent hotel. From there, we went back into town, where we treated ourselves to a burger. Next, we headed to the spectacular Arch Rock. This is a rock with a big hole through which you can see Lake Huron. It took 207 steps to reach the viewpoint, but it was definitely worth it. We then continued over Fort Mackinaw back towards the harbor. There, we bought ourselves a piece of fudge. This extremely sweet chocolate was created by a mishap of a caramel maker in the early 19th century. You can find fudge in what feels like every second store here, and fudge is still handmade today. After a delicious ice cream, we headed back to Mackinaw City. At the harbor, many buses and small trains were waiting to take people back to their parking lot. An attendant showed us which train we needed to take. Unfortunately, this train did not go to the parking lot where our car was, and in no time, we sat alone in the train. We tried to explain to the driver again where our car was parked, and he drove off again. We passed our parking lot but unfortunately, he didn't see us waving and calling out. And he stopped again at the wrong parking lot. We then got out there and walked back. Now we are going to sit comfortably by the lake and let the evening wind down.
