Tag 159: Excursion to Whittier and one last glacier

Publicados: 18.08.2018

Today we made the last excursion on the Kenai Peninsula before returning to Anchorage. We took a small side road to the Bryon Glacier. There we did a "difficult" hike by American standards; 30 minutes on a two meter wide gravel path. Since this path was way too relaxed for us, we made our way closer to the glacier. We climbed over a large field of rocks until we reached a small hill. From there, while enjoying a small snack, we had a great view of the glacier and its entire ice field. Suddenly, Mom spotted a black bear in the distance on the tongue of the glacier (if we estimated correctly from a distance). We followed the bear as it ran through the valley for over 15 minutes until it eventually disappeared behind some bushes. Afterwards, we walked back to the parking lot. From there, we drove through a railway tunnel, which is open to cars, to reach the port city of Whittier. It was one of the ugliest cities I've seen on this trip, but admittedly, we didn't go there for the city itself; we just wanted to drive through the single-lane railway tunnel. In the evening, we looked for our shared accommodation here in Alaska, because starting tomorrow, my journey continues alone...
