Then we sat in the beautiful little park next door, ate delicious pizza, and thought about the next stop... the Statue of Liberty.
What would it be like to take the ferry there and see this landmark up close? We were all very excited and had to learn that it gets very busy at noon and it takes time to quickly get a ferry. But once we arrived, we got free audio guides and were able to explore the museum and the island on our own with the guide, and we learned and experienced so much.
Everyone knows the Statue of Liberty, but today we learned a lot about it. From the builder to the symbols. For example, at the foot of the statue are broken chains, which represent the abolition of slavery and thus the freedom of all people. By the way, the abolition of slavery also inspired the Frenchman Laboulaye to build the statue - he also dreamed of it for his own French people. And we didn't know that there is a small Eiffel Tower built inside the giant statue by none other than Mr. Eiffel to stabilize it... The torch had to be replaced at some point because the construction did not hold up.
To get Lukas in the mood for his birthday, we made a short stop at the Nike flagship store on the way home and got a very special gift.... What is it? Check back tomorrow....
