Not far from the Czech border, between the two towns of Rathen and Wehlen, is the rock formation called the Bastei, from which you have a wonderful view of the Elbe River and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The viewing platform is located about 200 meters above the level of the Elbe River. From the Bastei, you can also reach the rock castle Neurathen via the Bastei Bridge. The tour costs 2€ admission - but it is definitely worth it! Attention: Those who have a fear of heights can easily reach their limits here! :)
The Bastei itself can be easily reached by car. There is a parking lot near the mountain hotel. For a reasonable 3€ per day, you can park your car there and then walk to the most popular excursion destination in Saxon Switzerland within 3-4 minutes.
One of the first hiking guides to lead guests to the Bastei was Carl Heinrich Nikolai, who wrote in 1801:
What strong feelings it pours into the soul! One stands for a long time, without being able to settle with oneself (…) it is difficult to tear oneself away from this place.
There is nothing to add to that.
