Oaxaca de Juárez

Publicados: 27.09.2019

Our bus odyssey began at 10:45 a.m., so with a delay of about thirty minutes. The first part of the trip was curvy but quite bearable. In the second half, Andrea felt sick, probably due to the driver's aggressive driving style. Mathias was busy watching his series - thirteen episodes in a row! The arrival in Oaxaca (pronounced Wa'haka) was a great relief. Andrea, looking very pale and weak, got off the bus. Later on, we found out that the motion sickness was actually food poisoning. We blamed the lunch snack we bought from an elderly lady at a rest stop.

A taxi took us to our accommodation, an Airbnb near the city center. Our hosts were super nice but spoke only Spanish, so we couldn't have a real conversation with them. It's a shame because they could have given us some good tips.

We had to cut short our exploration tour of the next day due to acute stomach troubles. Since just the mention of the word "bus" made Andrea feel sick, we decided to spend another night in Oaxaca.

The next day, our health condition improved, and we went on an exploration tour. Oaxaca de Juarez is the provincial capital of the state of Oaxaca. About 3.5 million people live in this part of the country. With its more than sixteen different ethnic groups, it is one of Mexico's culturally diverse states. The city is located 1550 meters above sea level and has around 255,000 inhabitants. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Oaxaca reminds us of San Cristobal de las Casas. The colorful houses in Spanish colonial style, the beautiful streets, and the numerous churches define the cityscape. The cathedral and the Inglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzman are particularly impressive. In addition to the main attractions, we explored the small side streets and bought souvenirs.

After two days in Oaxaca, we continue our journey to the sea by bus. Another long ride awaits us. We are looking forward to relaxing on the beach.
