Hallstatt to Kranjska Gora

Publicados: 02.07.2019

The morning in Obertraun looks promising, meaning sunny! After packing the mopeds and making the decision of what to wear, we set off.

Our first stop is in Hallstatt to refuel and put on more layers... clouds are already looming over the Dachstein Mountains, which doesn't bode well!

We make our way relatively dry through the Salzkammergut to Carinthia, where the rain finally catches up with us. Once again, we have to put on our rain gear 🙄.

We take a break at a bakery for lunch, enjoying sandwiches and cappuccino. It's warm and dry again, and we run into four guys from Bavaria whom we had waited with at the last construction site traffic light for 10 minutes. Afterward, we check the rain radar again and ask ourselves the annoying question: rain suit on or not???

Of course, we make the wrong decision again, and a few kilometers before Katschberg, we have to stop and pack up. We're getting the hang of it slowly ;-)

The rain is only drizzling, and the ride is uneventful. We stop in Villach for a coffee by Lake Ossiach, beautiful and idyllic.

However, for the last 25 km over Wurzenpass, the rain gear has to come back on. The conditions are extremely poor, with potholed road surfaces, water running down the tracks, and a thunderstorm on top... We've driven this pass a few years ago, and it's a real treat in terms of landscapes and curves, but in a thunderstorm, you only notice it on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, the bikes purr obediently up and down the steep ramps and hairpin bends, and we reach Podkoren, a picturesque mountain village near Kranjska Gora.

The hotel immediately compensates for everything, like a doll's house, super friendly staff, and very delicious food at reasonable prices.

What stuck with me amidst all the dressing and undressing? I love the scent of fresh wood, the ethereal notes of the forest, and the spicy smell of fresh, herbaceous mountain meadow hay. And the smell of the farms and alpine pastures with their hopefully happy cows!

And tomorrow it's supposed to stay dry !!!!!
