We drive through Karri Forest to Margaret River, where we will stay for 3 nights. Since our daily distances are not as long anymore at the end of the trip, we have enough time to make a detour to Beedelup Falls, a small waterfall in the middle of the dense forest of Karri trees.
Our next destination is Cap Leeuwin in Augusta, the southwesternmost point of Western Australia, with a distinctive white lighthouse.
At the Cape, we also have our lunch break between wildflowers and the sea.
After a photo break, we drive the remaining kilometers north to Margaret River.
This lively town with 4000 inhabitants is the center of the local wine region. Accordingly, many, but too expensive, wine tours are offered here. But we prefer to drink affordable wine from the bottleshop.
Our "Margaret River Beach Resort" is about 8 km from the town center, beautifully located directly in the dunes by the sea.
Here we have another modern and large apartment.
After coffee on our balcony, we take a walk to the nearby beach.
For dinner, we go to the restaurant of our resort, even though we are not really pleased with the menu. That's a mistake. After over an hour of waiting, Gisela and Günther receive their food upon request, ours was forgotten. When it finally arrives, my chicken wings are half burnt. I've lost my appetite. The whole dinner is a complete disaster!
Last relaxing days by the sea
21.11. and 22.11.2018
Our journey is slowly coming to an end and our last days in Downunder will be more relaxing.
We drive south and north along the coast from our accommodation, visiting various beaches, each with its own charm.
In Hamelin Bay, a gentle bay with a flat sandy beach, the black stingrays come right up to our feet on the shore. We can even touch them easily. It's just an amazing experience.
At another beach, the waves crash with tremendous force onto the rocks in the water. We can watch the spray shooting up into the air again and again.
Some beaches are also real surfer paradises. We watch the brave surfers waiting for the right wave to "ride" it towards the shore.
We also drive to the mouth of the Margaret River where it meets the sea and walk through the fine sand on the beach.
The temperatures have risen again, but there is usually a fresh breeze. We still don't feel like going into the water.
After our self-catering dinner yesterday, we go back to Margaret River for dinner on our last evening here. We choose Settlers Tavern. It's a rustic restaurant, quite large and crowded. How long will we have to wait for our food? We are seated, water (which is free everywhere) is brought, glasses and the menu. Then we have to order and pay for the food at one counter. There is a number stand that is placed on the table and later the food is brought. We pay and get the drinks at another counter. While waiting for the food, we conduct social studies because it's difficult to talk due to the noise level. Our food (sirloin steak) arrives quite quickly and tastes excellent. But we are still glad to escape this atmosphere.
