The weather is good and we decide spontaneously to drive to Cape Reinga. It is located about 300 km north of Kerikeri and is the northernmost point in New Zealand. We left after lunch and arrived at around 4:30 pm.
All the tour buses were already gone, so we had the Cape to ourselves. After taking some photos, we had dinner right by the lighthouse and watched the sunset.
We spent the night in our car in the nearby parking lot. The absolute highlight was the night sky full of stars. It was so dark around that you could only see stars from one horizon to the other. Even planets and the Milky Way *.*
The next day, we wanted to hike a round trail near the Cape. It started in the middle of a cow and sheep pasture. The sign pointed straight ahead, so we hiked up and down the hills, through the pasture and partially through a swampy area. Claudi eventually found it strange and we looked out for a sign. A few hundred meters further, we found one... From there, the path became much more passable. We walked through a forest and dunes to reach the beach. Luckily, we were the only ones there, so we could enjoy the wonderful view and clear water in peace and take a nap :D On the way back, we noticed that there were orange signs everywhere. If we had read the sign correctly at the beginning, we could have saved a lot of unnecessary walking...
In the afternoon, we went to Te Paki Stream and surfed on the 3 km long and gigantic sand dunes.
