After our short detour to the peninsula near Orbitello, Pitigliano welcomes us with a breathtaking view and a backdrop worthy of the cinema.
This sight was definitely worth the long drive and we are excited to see what awaits us in this special city and, above all, what our “earth accommodation” will be like, right in the middle of the city walls.
As always, in most cities you have to park outside the city walls, but that's not a problem. In Italy I recommend the “App - Easypark” because it really makes a lot of things easier. We set off with our “small” luggage for 2 nights in search of our accommodation, which is really located in the middle of the small streets of the old town. After some back and forth we find what we are looking for and what can we say... a special accommodation in the middle of the walls.
Pitigliano – the village made of tuff
The Etruscan name is unknown, the current one derives from an important Roman family. Legend has it that the village was founded by two Romans, Petilio and Celiano, which - by combining their names - results in Pitigliano. Thanks to the simple processing of the volcanic rock, a “tuff civilization” arose in which the Etruscans, the people of the underworld, and the Jews, the people of the law, left their mark. The Etruscans stubbornly dug into the interior of the earth and built tombs, hypogea and tunnels. Even today, beneath the spectacular town of Pitigliano lies another underground city, made up of rock oratories, galleries and tunnels for water drainage, columbaria with pigeon cells, stables, cellars and ancient rock houses converted into warehouses. Vats, barrels, wine presses and oil mills are still preserved in these rooms.
We enjoy our time in this special city and let the day pass. This special place with its beautiful little streets invites you to linger. The small shops with various handicrafts and culinary delights from the area leave nothing to be desired and the day just flows by.
What else can you do in such a beautiful place other than just enjoy it? I believe that this is the only right way and of course it also includes enjoying one or two delicacies and a glass or two.
The days in Pitigliano come to an end, but not without presenting themselves in a fantastic picture in the evening. Thank you Pitigliano, it was really a nice time.
