The Mt. Cook (also known as Aoraki in Maori) is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching an elevation of 3,724 meters.
The Mt. Cook Village is situated on a plateau and serves as a great base for hikes with views of Mt. Cook.
One popular hike is the Hooker Valley Track, which starts at the camping site and leads to the Hooker Lake below Mt. Cook after a hike of about one and a half hours, crossing several suspension bridges.
Another shorter track is the Kea Point Track. This hiking trail is much less crowded. It starts in the Mt. Cook Village and ends at Mueller Lake with a view of Mt. Cook, although from a further distance than the Hooker Lake.
Thanks to its remote location, it is also a great spot for stargazing at night. However, the Mt. Cook National Park is only the second-best place in New Zealand for this activity. You can read about the best spot for stargazing in New Zealand in my next blog.
