Desert Offroad 2.0

ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ: 07.11.2019

Yes, the desert fever has caught us, which means we can't resist and dare it again, this time offroad from Mhamid through the Erg Chegaga to Foum Zguid. A little bit of sand or fechfech won't knock us down so quickly anymore. Although at some point we do get a bit too adventurous when trying to speed over a great sand dune, that's why we have the sand plates with us.

...not anymore.
...not anymore.

The ride through the sand continues, I mean 50km at about 20km/h, you can do the math. At the halfway point, we thought we were done and Martin let the compressor run. When the sandy track started again, we were too lazy to deflate the tires again. Obviously, it worked fine with full tires as well. Martin still had to drive a few maneuvers that made me pull faces and demonstratively grab the handles with my hands. Towards the end, even he admitted that sand driving can become a bit monotonous.

Lac Iriki

During the drive over Lac Iriki, a huge dry lake, we overtake a cyclist and wonder how this guy managed to make it through the desert, respect!

It's incredibly hot, at least compared to Swiss 'or emel' Tenner standards, and we can feel it in our stomachs. So we look for a shady spot to spend the night and find an idyllic spot in the middle of the sand dunes. We set up the hammock, cook Berber omelettes, dig ourselves into the sand, and collect firewood.
But what we underestimated were the flies. As soon as the heat subsides, they practically devour us. We try to ignore them and once again enjoy a colorful sunset. Soon the magnificent starry sky above us sparkles and we end the day by the campfire.

The next day we continued through a beautiful plateau landscape, a mountain range that we named the 37 Churfirsten, back towards civilization. With the city of Foum Zguid in sight, there were a few more kilometers to go, roughly an hour, on rough gravel.
In Foum Zguid, we had the best tajine in a nice restaurant, but we were immediately overrun by civilization, an organized camper group, a group in a bus, and a few motocross riders all joined the restaurant next door. We made our escape, found a campsite with a nice pool, and now we're taking care of our stomachs for the time being.
