The Sierra de las Minas is located in northeastern Guatemala, between the valleys of the Polochic River and the Motagua River. This region is very important for the natural development of animals and vegetation.
From east to west, it stretches approximately 130 kilometers in length. And in fact, it varies between 10 to 30 kilometers in width. At some points, it has elevations of 3,015 meters above sea level. In total, it has an area of 242.64 hectares.
The report indicates that 63 rivers are born in this place, which is considered the most important "water factory" in Guatemala. It also states that there are about 885 species of mammals such as cougars, jaguars, ocelots, tigrillos, spider monkeys, and howler monkeys whose sightings have been documented thanks to the installation of special cameras in the cloud forest.
There are also about twenty species of amphibians and more than 400 types of birds, including the quetzal, the peregrine falcon, and the horned guan. In addition, there are conifers such as the Guatemalan fir —Abies guatemalensis—
The area is the second most important lung in Guatemala, after the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Petén, and it is of vital importance for humanity, because of what it represents in terms of water generation, oxygen, flora, and fauna.
