day five and evening before burgos - fromista

ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ: 03.05.2018

At the hotel, my parents were waiting, which was very nice. After swimming, I went on a shopping tour with them, but almost everything was closed... but the stores had enough bread and noodles.

Then we went to dinner together. The menus in Spain are great. Everyone can find something for little money and the wine is already included ;)

After a good night's sleep, we got up at seven and took it easy. First, we visited the cathedral. It is simply wonderful and huge. It has been expanded multiple times.

Then we left burgos again. Now on the original pilgrimage path. Until now, I mostly rode parallel to the asphalt. However, after burgos, the last 30km... that requires a lot more effort as it has more resistance and energy is also lost through the suspension. You have to pedal more (and eat later). Unfortunately, my friend is having trouble eating because he has an upset stomach. Since it is already difficult to find food, it doesn't get any easier. We try to adjust our diet... but yeah, difficult.

Nevertheless, we keep going. First, up to the meseta, a kind of high plateau. And so we have to go up again. Over rocky paths, and sometimes we have to push. Then it goes very steeply downhill, so you can hardly see where you're going. In the guidebook, I read later that you should also push there. Too late.

In Hontanas, we walk along a country road because we have had enough of the rough rocky paths. This path seems to be a good decision because now the wind carries you at up to 25km/h. Simply fantastic. When we pass through Castrojeriz, we should return to the rocky pilgrimage path. This one would also go over a mountain. But since my friend doesn't look like he wants to go over the mountain (neither do I), I find an alternative route around the mountain. This one also leads over a rocky path, but only briefly. Behind the mountain, it continues on asphalt again. With a tailwind, we quickly reach Boadilla del Camino. Unfortunately, there is nothing to buy there and only two hostels. We decide to continue to Fromista. 7km to go and the search for a place to sleep begins again. The first hostel is already full, so we go to a private one. We avoid the "canal" because it smells strong there. Or the area does. The one next to the railway line would also not be the best choice...

The hostel we choose is called Estrella. A wood stove in the lounge. Bunk beds side by side, but not too many. And this time the shower water is warm. Wonderful.

Since the heating system feels like having a golden liquid, we ask the hostel father for it. He is so kind and "gives" it to us.

70km
