Here in Siem Reap everything revolves around Angkor Wat. The temple complexes shape the whole city and attract masses of tourists - including us, of course. In the travel guides, you can find different recommendations from one-day tours to week-long programs. We have decided to spend a day in the temple complexes and try to visit the most important and beautiful ones.
To get from one temple to another - sometimes a few kilometers - we hired a tuk-tuk driver. The short rides in between were also worth their weight in gold to cool off in the wind. The thermometer showed 35° and the temples only provide partial shade.
So we started at the main temple Angkor Wat, then visited Bayon (Angkor Thom), and then drove the Grand Tour Circuit, where we also visited some smaller complexes. We saved Ta Prohm for last, which is particularly famous because it was used for the filming of Tomb Raider. For sunset, we went up to Pre Rup, where we could enjoy a magnificent view and let our legs dangle.
After the exhausting day of sightseeing, we chose a hearty dinner and visited the Bug Café. In addition to spiders and scorpions (crispy), there were also smaller beetles and larvae - and it was actually delicious in a way. Depending on the sauce, of course :)
We are already leaving Siem Reap now. There is certainly much more to discover here, but we are drawn further to Phnom Penh and towards Vietnam.
