The town of Civitella in Val di Chiana towers like a castle on a hill. I ride there hoping for coffee. But the town is deserted, everything is closed. The only visible person is an old man struggling to unfold the umbrellas of a restaurant. I ask if it is open, but I don't understand the response. I just want to have a coffee. Yes, he says, his son is inside, he will make me a coffee.
Down in San Giuliano, it's fast, for once the road doesn't have potholes and I can improve my average speed. Not that it is important to me, but if you already have the navigation app on the handlebars, then you look at it - at least I do.
At one of the numerous roundabouts, I take the wrong exit and end up on the highway. It's not easy to turn around and get to the other side of the road. As soon as I manage to do that, a heavy motorcycle stops in front of me. Sh... I think, it's probably the police. But the motorcyclist just wants to tell me that the better road for cyclists is one exit further. He rolls up the sleeve of his polo shirt and shows me the tattoo on his strong biceps: a bicycle!
Kommot sends me to the address of the campsite once again through dirt roads and trails. Eventually, I arrive and find out that there is no campsite anywhere nearby. A man is working in the garden, I ask him. Yes, he says, the campsite owner lives here. He gets in his small pickup truck and drives ahead for the one and a half kilometers so that I don't get lost on the gravel roads.
The campsite is beautiful, chickens are running around everywhere, of course there are also cats, (very friendly) dogs and goats. Besides me, there are 4 motorhomes and a motorcyclist.
