Dempster Highway

On Saturday, August 25th, there will be a delicious dinner in Dawson City with beautiful sunshine. Clear sky? Aurora Borealis? We set the alarm for 1.30am. Nina jumps out of bed, report: They are weak, but they exist. After a short time, the clear command came 'get out of bed, the sky is glowing green'! Fantastic! What an experience.

On Sunday, we head from Dawson City to the Dempster Hwy. Are there words for this natural beauty? We think that the superlatives are missing! Let the pictures speak...

On Sunday, we drive in beautiful weather until we reach Eagle Plains with a short stop at the Tombstone Information Center. In Eagle Plains, at kilometer 371, is the first gas station (at 11.3 miles/gal, mmh grmbl, shuut, do you know what we are talking about?).

The restaurant/motel is very simple, but the food looked ok, so after 8 hours of bumpy road, we order salmon and chicken. This way we save Verny's tanks and save time after the long day. Rain is forecasted for the next few days, too bad, but it is what it is.

The alarm goes off at 12.30am again, we might still have Northern Lights before the rain comes, this time it's a false alarm. The night actually brings rain, as if the Hwy wasn't already exhausting enough with its ridiculously many potholes, no, now it's also really 'soapy' in places. Nevertheless, we drive off in the fog, another 36km to the Arctic Circle. Click click and back south. About 407km back to the junction. The rain is manageable and Marcel is quite satisfied with the roads. The passenger has been tense since we saw a 'Verny' and a PW in the ditch and two Jeeps with big off-road tires pulling themselves out of the ditch. It doesn't need that much! The road shoulders are hanging and you can only dream of guardrails (they are overrated anyway). But as I said, highway-wise, it's the most beautiful since the beginning of our trip. On the second day, we spend a night by the river, so we only have 120km left until we leave the Dempster. On the way out, we actually saw our first lynx by the roadside, awesome! Unfortunately, no photo, Kärli disappeared too quickly into the bushes.

Now we wish you a lot of fun with the pictures, we are blown away!

Wunderschön! Was für ein Erlebnis - und das jeden Tag! Danke für die schönen Bilder, unsere Erde ist auch dort drüben einmalig schön, atemberaubend. Weiterhin gute Fahrt!

Elena
Ooohhh... so schön!
