November 21-23, 2021: Cassis

F. After a super sunny week, the next few days were supposed to be a bit unsettled. So it started raining in the morning. We took the time to plan the coming days and then drove to the Calanques National Park. We parked at the parking lot of the University of Marseille, located in the small town of Luminy. From there, we took advantage of the short break in the rain and walked the 2 km to the viewpoint.

Since camping is not allowed in the national park, we continued on to Cassis. From here, we hiked through the Calanques the next day. The Calanques, fjord-like coves in the limestone of the Mediterranean, stretch for about 20 km between Cassis and Marseille. We opted for a approximately 12 km circular hiking trail from Cassis. The trail initially followed the coastline, just like a few days ago. Here too, there was everything from fine and coarse gravel to soft sandy ground. We climbed the approximately 150 meters in elevation three or four times. One descent looked as if this path had just been created by a rockslide a few days ago, as you had to be careful not to slide down the steep slope with football-sized stones. But since various hiking groups, including park rangers, were coming towards us, we didn't worry about it any further.

The coves have turquoise-colored waters, and like many others, we stayed here for our lunch break.

After the hike, we actually wanted to explore Cassis more, but this plan was quickly ended by a rain shower, and we had to continue our exploration tour the next day.
