4th-6th October 2018: The last stage of the Rennsteig from Neuhaus am Rennweg to Blankenstein was to be conquered together with Jens. We started in the afternoon in Neuhaus and walked about 10 km until darkness quickly caught up with us. However, shortly before that, we found a nice place for our overnight camp. We camped right on the former German-German border. The warm temperatures in October at night and the good weather surprised me a lot. Ideal weather for running and sleeping outside. The next morning, it was already bright when we woke up. We quickly headed east on the Rennsteig. On the way, we crossed the former border several times. You can still clearly see the green belt (newly grown vegetation) that stretches across the country and the old road on the GDR side. We walked all day. A beer boosted morale after 25 km and drove us further. In total, we ran at least 35 km that day. In the small village of Schlegel, darkness fell upon us and we treated ourselves to a warm meal in the local (nostalgic) restaurant. After that, we moved on to spend the night in the Wegespinne shelter. We were surprised because the shelter even had windows and we slept wonderfully again. The next day, it was only 5 km left and we quickly reached the goal in Blankenstein.
After at least 170 km, the Rennsteig was conquered here after 6 stages. Exhausted and happy, we treated ourselves to a herbal schnapps at the finish and then went back home.
