In Ross we actually ended up by chance because I (Christina) urgently needed to use the bathroom.
When we arrived and I was in the bathroom, we found out that Ross is a former gold mining town. As we strolled through the town for a while, we saw some amazing things. There is a hiking trail that goes up the mountain and also through a forest, where you can find the remnants of the former gold mines. It takes about 1 hour to walk it, we took the time to do it since the weather had improved and it was very strenuous, but also educational. We saw mines and an old house and learned a lot about the history of the 'gold town'. At the end of the hiking trail, there was a cemetery right on a lookout platform, from which you can oversee the entire region. It was a breathtaking view.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed... otherwise we could have tried panning for gold ourselves. It was a super unplanned experience.
Unfortunately, we didn't find any gold on our 'gold expedition' .....
