Abel Tasman National Park (NZL)

The Abel Tasman National Park is the smallest national park in New Zealand. But it is paradise-like beautiful - wooded mountains and many small (lonely) sandy beaches.

The Abel Tasman Coast Track, one of the Great Walks in New Zealand, leads through this paradise. The entire route can be hiked in three to five days. However, all provisions and equipment must be carried along as there are only a few simple huts to stay on the way.

For the first time during my trip through New Zealand, it was so warm (25°C) that a T-shirt and shorts were appropriate. The weather in Abel Tasman National Park showed itself from its best side.

I walked the track from the start to Observation Bay and back (about 20 km). The route leads through the forest along the coast, with various opportunities to explore individual bays along the way.

After the kayakers were gone after lunch, Observation Bay turned out to be a lonely bay - which may be because it takes an extra 20 minutes (round trip) from the track to get there. Lucky for me, I had a nice time on my own sunny and lonely beach :)

The park had another highlight for me - I went horseback riding on the beach :)

Opposite the campsite where I stayed, horse riding tours are offered and I spontaneously decided to book a tour there.

So, it happened that I was back on a horse after a long time. The little mare 'B' is a bit fussy towards other horses, but relatively easy to ride.

The rides take place at low tide, as the sea recedes very far there and you can ride well on the beach. I had a 2-hour ride with a guide in the morning and I enjoyed the tour :)

Conclusion: The Abel Tasman National Park is already one of my favorite places in New Zealand.
