Crossing....

From Puerto Penasco we drive through the godforsaken Pinacate y Gran Desierto del Pinacar. Sand dunes, scrub, and nothing else. Traffic practically non-existent, but there are frequent military checkpoints that can be annoying but ultimately leave a feeling of security.

The goal for the day is San Felipe on the west side of the Gulf of California. Not a very interesting place, but a good stopping point in terms of distance. We are warmly welcomed at a campground for 'SnowBirds', as the Americans who spend the winter here in retirement are called. We watch football and sit in the unheated restaurant bundled up in heavy jackets.

Despite the strong wind, walks on the beach still provide a first taste of vacation.
