Since Swiss has been flying to Hong Kong only with the Boeing 777 for a long time, for which I (still) do not have a license, I took the opportunity to fly from nearby Taiwan to Hong Kong.
We landed in Hong Kong at around 10:00 in the morning. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is located on Lantau Island, which offers various attractions. Therefore, we started our Hong Kong trip directly on this island. First, after a long wait, we took the cable car to Tian Tan Buddha, a huge Buddha statue located in the midst of nature on a hill. Afterwards, we took the bus to a small fishing village called Tai O. Locals sold seafood snacks and other delicacies. Some of the houses were built on simple stilts and looked quite unstable. I wonder how these houses can survive the regular typhoons. After a short stay in the village, we visited Cheung Sha Beach, which is said to have good surf spots. However, there were no waves to be seen, so we just relaxed. The beach was very beautiful: light sand, clean and quiet. Apart from a few cows, we were almost the only ones enjoying the sun on the beach.
Towards the end of this successful first day, we went to the city center of Hong Kong, where we found our hotel room.
Conclusion: Lantau Island is a peaceful green oasis in Hong Kong that is not far from the city center and is easily accessible by metro. A must-visit for a trip to Hong Kong.
