From Arta to the Peloponnese

Maxxanfame: 13.09.2024

After another fairly quiet night at a rest area high above Arta, we visit the “least known city in Greece.” In fact, we encounter other tourists only after several hours. I feel a bit like a “colorful dog.”

The small town in the northwest does not have much to offer tourists aside from the oldest arched bridge in Greece. There’s also the so-called Ali-Pasha Plane Tree, under which this Ottoman pasha is said to have witnessed the execution of his adversaries. We sip our first “Freddo” (coffee on the rocks) in the shade of this sprawling tree, and probably my last. The town also hosts a massive fortress, of which not much is visible besides the walls and a tower.

This place is really not a must-see. On the other hand, one gets to experience a bit of Greek small-town life away from mass tourism.

In the afternoon, we continue towards the Peloponnese. There, we arrive just in time for a swim in the setting sun at a very nice campsite by the Gulf of Corinth.

The weather today was quite mixed, with rain and piercing sun giving each other a handshake.
