Greece - Pearls of the North

Travel Impressions

Well, what else should I write about. 😊

I've picked out a few things for you from my second home; basically where I always wander around in the summer and maybe you'll end up there someday. 😊

Xanthi

On Saturday, be sure to visit the weekly market halls in the city center (fresh fruits, meat and fish). Afterwards, stroll through the bazaar and listen to the vendors shouting. There you can find the best bougatsa or tiropita (warm puff pastry with vanilla pudding, spinach, or feta cheese filling); an absolute must in Greece and a popular breakfast.

Kavala

A harbor city about 2 hours away from Thessaloniki. Be sure to climb the steep hill through the old town up to the castle and enjoy the view of Kavala from the top (most beautiful in the evening, at dusk or when it's dark). Then stroll back down to the harbor and enjoy a nice walk and good food there.

Alistrati

One of the most beautiful stalactite caves in Europe. Be careful, because in the summer months the temperatures there are about 40°C, as the place is located in a basin, while the stalactite cave itself has a constant temperature of 18°C (don't forget your jacket).

Nestos Gorge / Nestos Delta

In the midst of the Greek mountains lies the Nestos Gorge south of the city of Stavroupolis. This is basically where my roots are and where our relatives live. In the Nestos Gorge, you can go hiking, do canoeing, or even take a train ride (part of the route is that of the Orient Express). The Nestos flows into the sea near Chrysoupoli. The delta itself consists of inland dunes and freshwater lakes and is home to an enormous flora and fauna.

And you can collect other beautiful impressions everywhere...

My Insider Tip

The beach in Keramoti near Chrysoupoli. A beautiful beach with a cool beach bar, sunbeds, great view, where you can walk along forever.

My second home and annual travel destination. From Keramoti, you can also take a ferry to the nearby island of Thassos (about 20 minutes). The island is also worth seeing and has white sandy beaches.
