18.12. - 22.12. Titicaca Islands

Publisert: 22.12.2018

After a delicious dinner, we took the night bus back to La Paz.

And two hours later, we continued to Puno on Lake Titicaca in Peru. After a cold night in a bad hotel, we headed out early in the morning for a two-day tour to some islands on the lake.

This time with a really great boat.

First to the floating islands of Uros. The islands consist of a thick layer of reeds. The indigenous population, who speak Aymara, build their houses on them. Extremely interesting and extremely touristy.

Then we were allowed to take a ride on this reed boat.

After buying very expensive souvenirs, we continued to Amantani. This island is inhabited by Quechua people. Here we were accommodated with families, where we also spent the night. That was quite exciting.

We also went on a three-hour mountain hike. Gasping for breath

This herb gives strength and helps against altitude sickness.

In the evening there was a great lightning storm and then an incredibly strong thunderstorm. Luckily, we only got caught in it at the end of the hike. Since the house was heated with a clay oven using wood, we would soon be dry again.

The next morning we headed to Taquile Island.

Here, the men traditionally knit hats with Inca patterns.

While we were waiting for a very delicious lunch, this young man showed us how to make shampoo from a specific plant.

We left the beautiful and very peaceful island through this gate.

Back in Puno, we went out to eat before returning to La Paz early in the morning. One border was blocked due to demonstrations, so all buses had to cross through another border crossing. It took forever at the border, especially since they also searched all luggage. The originally 7-hour drive took ultimately 10 hours and we arrived in La Paz quite battered.

Quickly to the hotel and then eat at Higher Ground, our culinary base in La Paz.

Since Milo has been plagued by severe homesickness lately, we have changed our plans and unfortunately fly back to Germany tonight. 😭 This is therefore our last post.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas in advance.
