All day rain, occasionally dry in the evening
From today we are back "in the south" - we have crossed the Arctic Circle again a few kilometers before Rovaniemi, the "gateway to Lapland and the Arctic". The city is located at the mouth of the Kemijoki River into the Ounasjoki River and is famous for being the home of Santa Claus.
In Rovaniemi, we have rented a modern, small apartment in the city center through AirBnB. After parking the car in the underground garage, we have lunch in the apartment and then go to the city despite the rain.
First, we visit the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge, then walk along the riverbank to the Arktikum, a science center and museum. We admire the architecture, part of the building consists of a glass corridor facing north, but we do not go into the exhibition.
A large complex of a city hall and administration, public library, congress center, and theater was designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. We also visit this and then stroll back, stopping at a shopping center to buy some groceries.
In the evening, we treat ourselves to one last Lappish meal at the Gustav restaurant, where we are served by a waiter from Austria.
