San José

San José

I left beautiful Orosi by bus and made my way to my final destination of this year's trip.

And luckily, I arrived in San José after just a few hours. A city that is the capital of Costa Rica, located fairly centrally in the country and also on a plateau, if you will. At an altitude of 1172 meters above sea level. This, of course, affects the climate. The temperatures are pleasant at around 24 degrees Celsius and there is often a breeze.

It is perfect as the end of the trip or also at the beginning, as you wish.
I would rather describe the city itself as unspectacular. There are no highlights like special buildings or skyscrapers. Nevertheless, the city has its hidden charm here and there when you walk through it.

There are some obvious modern architectural sins. Every now and then, you can discover an old colonial-style building like the Old National Theater or the Costa Rican Post Office. And if you leave the city center to the north, you quickly reach the old historic district of Barrio Amon, with its impressive old mansions of the former coffee barons.

On the way there, you will be amazed when you suddenly see a piece of the Berlin Wall.

It is also worth mentioning the two old markets, Mercado Central and Mercado Borbon. Two lively old markets in the western part of the city center, which I love and visit everywhere in the world.

Life is bustling here, and you can buy everything from fruits, vegetables, meat to souvenirs, some of them made in China. But be careful of pickpockets.

Journey back home

I spent the last two days here and let's say that's enough to get to know San José. For me, it meant saying goodbye once again after six wonderful and eventful weeks.

Once again, I struggled with my driver for over an hour, traveling 20 kilometers to "Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaria". From here, my first flight took off with a spectacular view of the two volcanoes Irazú and Turrialba, first to Panama City in about 70 minutes and from here, after a short layover, over Madrid, another 10 hours to Frankfurt and another 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Farewell

I would like to say thank you once again. To the incredibly lovely people in Panama and Costa Rica. But also thank you to all the people who accompanied me in stages and those who always encourage me to embark on new and interesting destinations.

And from now on, all I can do is dream of this breathtaking nature and diversity of animals and hope that it will continue to be preserved for a long time.

Thank you very much.

Pura Vida!
