Through the ski team, I had the opportunity to go to Whistler. The whole thing had been planned since October and last week, from 22.02 to 24.02, it finally happened. With 7 other people + 3 teachers, we set off. By the way, 5 of these 7 others were German-speaking.
On the 22nd, we left after school with the cozy new (not) van from school. In Nanaimo, we took the ferry and continued from Vancouver to Squamish, where we bought food. We arrived in Whistler at 10 o'clock. At first, it was very unusual to see people on the street at such a late hour.
We stayed in a cozy lodge, all in one vacation apartment. A friend and I had our own room, and the boys spread out in the rest of the apartment.
On Friday morning, we hit the slopes, especially early in order to make good use of the very expensive lift tickets. Whistler as a ski area is amazing. It is divided into two mountains (Blackcomb and Whistler) that are connected by a gondola. And everything is very big and expansive.
On Friday, we first went to Blackcomb. The snow was awesome, but it was really cold, it snowed and it was windy at higher altitudes. Around noon, we took the gondola to Whistler. There, on our first descent, my friend and I both fell individually but at the same time in the family zone on an easy green slope. We still can't explain how we managed to do that. After that, we had lunch and spent the rest of the day skiing easier slopes on Whistler.
After a long day of skiing, we went back to the lodge, rested for a bit, and then went back into town. Whistler Village is really cute. There are small shops everywhere and illuminated trees. When we got back to the lodge, the boys had prepared food for us. We then decided to go back into town to take a group photo in front of the Olympic rings. We also went to the hot tub in the evening.
The second day on skis was also the last one, but it was really awesome. The snow was still great and the sun was shining. We skied the freestyle slope twice and distributed ourselves evenly between Blackcomb and Whistler. We had lunch at a waffle house. At the end of the day, we took the Olympic valley run to Creekside and then returned to the lodge, where we packed up all our stuff and headed back.
In summary, it was a short and expensive trip, but it was really worth it. Seeing Whistler was a must for me, and I would never have gone there again otherwise. However, it must be said that while Whistler is big, Austrian ski resorts can easily compete. The lifts are not modern at all, and we kept ending up on some green towpaths. But if you are in the area, Whistler is highly recommended.
